THE ISLAND OF MYKONOS – HERE WE COME

WEATHER: Cloudy to start the day in Athens – but hot and sunny on Mykonos and 30C
HIGHTLIGHT OF THE DAY: WE ARE ON MYKONOS
BUMMER OF THE DAY: We are on Mykonos – no bummers today
BUYS OF THE DAY:  Happy hour at the hotel – all bottled drinks 2 for 1
WORD OF THE DAY:  Yamas – again I know
So I think this has been the earliest start to a day we have ever had in the history of my 79 days.  But as mentioned the other day, the sacrifice of sleep certainly outweighs the glory of arriving onto Mykonos at a reasonable hour.  5.15am the alarm goes off and we are all assembled in reception at 6am.  We were supplied with boxed breakfasts, that were a little ordinary, but something is better than nothing right?

We travel 15 minutes to the port of Athens to catch our Blue Star ferry to Mykonos.  We are boarding as foot passengers, so once we got to the port, we stored our bags on the car deck of the ferry and ventured upstairs where we had reserved seating.  Ed was telling us that there may be some grannies that might try and steal our seats, as we were in the ‘classy’ section of the ferry.  Even though it sounds mean, we have paid for that and they haven’t so move on grandma!!!  The ferry journey took 5 hours and 20 minutes, with 2 stops along the way, but they were only for 10 minutes and then we were on our way again.  We arrived into Mykonos at 12.50pm.  After collecting our bags and disembarking the ferry there was a coach transfer to take us the 20 minutes to our hotel.

With check-in completed we hit the pool area and landed some sun chairs and this is where we stayed all afternoon.  Now this is how to holiday.  It feels a little strange that we won’t have to check out for 3 whole nights!  I had a Toblerone cocktail and a chicken salad for lunch while reading my book by the pool with the Greek sun beating down, and yes I did put on sunscreen.  We also went for a dip in the pool, where we played some pool soccer, and the girls were all losing their bikini tops every time they went for a goal shot, it was so funny.  Not me though in my conventional one piece and shorts.  I am surprised I even went in the pool to be honest, this body ain’t swimmer material, but as the guys say, who cares, and I AM in Greece right!  The pool was so cold to start with, but once in it was so re-freshing!

We had a toga party tonight.  If you can believe it is my first one ever, and also the rest of the posse, haven’t dressed for one before either.  The main question was what do you wear underneath?  Ed said the traditional way is NUDE, but none of us were that keen for nude, so it was a mix between swim wear, under wear and some had no bras but undies.  We hired the sheets from reception for 2EUR and were given a demo from Ed on how to wrap the suckers.  The sheets were in ordinary condition and I am assuming that they were retired sheets, as there were some dubious stains, holes and rips in some of them.  You had to have 2 people to get the thing on, as some-one has to hold an end while you literally twisted yourself into the sheet.  There were 5 of us all crowded into Dee and Lisa’s room to get us all dressed, it was hilarious the first few times, we would think we had it right and then after we finished some-one else, a boob would be popping out already.  So we would need to re-wrap and go a little tighter.  The key was to not have them too short at the back and that they were tight enough around the bustage!  But once we were all happy with our wraps, we all looked AWESOME!  With some touches of jewelry and some olive branches picked from outside we headed to the pool where happy hour had started.

The toga party was awesome.  It was amazing to see just how many ways a plain old white sheet could be made into a piece of clothing.  Some people were super creative.  We had our hands full just trying to get the standard and easiest way onto our bodies.  I decided to stick to beer, so Kasey and I went into shouts and drank Corona’s all night for 2.50EUR, now that has to be a bargain right!  The night rolled on, and people’s toga’s had to be fixed on numerous occasions, and I think at one stage Bree couldn’t lift her toga it was that tight, and had to be re-wrapped after a toilet stop!  As you can imagine with a beach and a pool, it was inevitable that some-one had to lose their togas for a swim and I think there was a nudie run on the beach and a few topless gals, but it is Contiki after all right!  A great night was had by all and with a 2am finish and knowing there was no rush to get up in the morning, flopping into bed drunk as a skunk with a smile on the dial was a great way to finish a great day – a long day but great all the same, considering we were on the go since 5am.
