ALL THE WAY TO CAPE TOWN

WEATHER: Cold and wet 17C
HIGHTLIGHT OF THE DAY: There isn’t one – it’s the last day of tour
BUMMER OF THE DAY: Last day of tour
BUYS OF THE DAY: Movie ticket to see Horrible Bosses for 6AUD
WORD OF THE DAY:

CAMP SITE RANKING: No more camping – we are in a hotel for the next 4 nights 5 out of 5 stars

Considering how much wine we had consumed last night we all pulled up okay.  Some had bigger smiles on their faces than others, but it is not my story to tell so we were up at 6.30am, breakfasted at 7.30am and then on the road in the wonderful (hear the sarcasm) Gypsy for our LAST DAY ON TOUR.  We only had 280km to cover today on good (majority) roads so it was only going to take a few hours.  Some of Namibia and South Africa are very much more western than their neighbors.  Gone now are the willages and road stalls selling food and wares.  The scenery in SA is now all lush and green with rolling hills and mountains.  Even with the shitty weather you could see the beauty of the scenery.

There were a lot of road works though, and some sections of the roads were super bouncy, like it would have been impossible to type on my laptop if I wanted to, it was a very booby ride in some spots.  So it slowed us down a little but we arrived safely into Cape Town at 11.30am.  As we were early our rooms were not yet ready so we had to store all out stuff in their luggage room which was just an office.  By the time I got all my gear off including sleeping bags etc. I had 9 bags!  Not sure if reception knew just what they were getting into when they said we could store our luggage, but they aren’t strangers to the end of trips, so the office did look like a luggage room when we finished with it!

So no room ready, shitty weather what were we going to do?  We found a super speedy internet across the road from the hotel, so we jumped on that for an hour till our tummies started to grumble so we headed next door to the hotel and had a pizza for lunch and it was awesome.  What do people do when they need to kill time?  Go to the movies, which just happened to be across the road!  Talk about location, location, location.  So we had a choice of 3 movies.  Horrible Bosses, Planet of the Apes or Bridesmaids.  We settled on Horrible Bosses and it was hilarious and the best thing was there were some parallels from our trip in the movie, like more than one, so it was pretty cool to be sitting in the cinema with Dave, Lisa and Sean watching it.  If you haven’t seen the movie – go, it is worth it.

So that killed a few hours, so by this time our rooms were ready, so back to the hotel to move my nine bags and get some semblance of order again.  I have picked up a new roomy though in the form of Dave.  Once again not my story to tell, but initially we were going to have to share a double bed for the 4 nights, till a bit of a room shuffle and we got a twin configuration – thank god!  So the rest of the afternoon was spent condensing my bags till I got 4 of the Intrepid bags emptied and either stuff thrown, donated or rearranged so I felt better that I was getting all my belongings under control after having them spread out over the truck for the last 2 months.

We were meeting the rest of the crew at Arnold’s, a game restaurant just up the road from the hotel.  Dave and I were ready a little early, so we decided to head up earlier and have a few drinks to get us on our way.  We had all intentions of having a pretty BIG night, not even thinking that it was a Tuesday.  I wasn’t in the mood to eat an abnormal animal so I settled on a ‘normal’ steak and after 6 vodka’s we headed to an Irish Bar for some live music.  Well we were a little disappointed that they had on the soccer and it pretty much took all the wind out of our big night plans and we were home and in bed by 11pm.  Oh well there is always tomorrow night.

Welcome to Cape Town.
